Evil Twin

A concept with
late 1930s styling and a sinister-looking grill line has appeared in the form
of Evil Twin, the lone Larry Wood design in this year's group of First
Editions. Actually, "sinister" is barely accurate to describe the look
of this lowrider, with its "jagged tooth" maw, widow's peak roofline and lots
of chrome.
The "twin" primarily refers to the pair of blown motors that protrude ominously
through the hood and slightly above the chopped roofline. Two huge side
exhausts extend down from behind the front wheels and under the doors.
The motors, exhaust, front grill and bumper are chromed plastic. The
body is die-cast and carries a coat of purple metallic paint. It features
good relief, including a molding that runs back from the widow's peak, bisecting
the tiny oval rear window to just above the symmetrical taillights on the trunk.
The majority of the chassis is black plastic, although details on the chromed
plastic extend underneath the car, such as the rear exhaust pipes. The
interior section is light tan plastic with good detail, and includes chrome accents
such as the center console and the pair of speakers on the rear deck. The
clear plastic glass is flush with the body at the windshield and rear windows,
and the complex seams in the widow's peak area between the roof and windshield
are pleasingly tight. The headlights and taillights are neatly masked in
silver and red respectively. The
only flaw I found was the tamped white rectangle with the punched-out Hot Wheels
logo filling in, as it did on the initial run of the 1970 Chevelle SS before
it was changed to a two-color tampo. The car rides on small lace wheels and
is manufactured in Malaysia.
I like most of Mr. Wood's designs, and this one is no exception. The little
details are always nifty, such as the chrome speakers behind the rear seat.
While it's a given we'll continue to see more of his creations in the Collectibles
line, hopefully some will be in the basic line next year as well.
