What a beautiful car.
Mattel continues to release the new castings for 2000 and, if the local speculators had had
their fill in your area, then the elegantly sculpted Phantastique should be surfacing.
This curvy concept roadster has mid 20th century style streamlining throughout, and actually
has more detail than it appears at first glance. The die-cast metal body, with its
graceful curves, is painted a medium blue metallic and supplemented by the remaining plastic
pieces. The chrome plated chassis part also includes the radiator grill, lower body trim,
windshield frame and stick shift. The two-pane clear windshield looks sharp framed in
chrome, and includes the dashboard detail as well (although difficult to see due to the clear
plastic). The beige colored interior includes a detailed steering wheel and full
floor. The inner door sides also are part of the chromed plastic part. The bottom
skirts, molded into the chassis, follow the lower contour of the body gracefully.
The body relief includes detailed headlights and taillights on the respective fenders, and it's
a shame they are not painted to make them more noticeable. The headlights in fact are
cat-like in shape and, combined with the grill appearance and overall design of the body, give
the car a feline look. Examination of the underside reveals a detailed drive train and
exhaust system. The wheels are inset, and the vehicle rides low on the medium-sized
gold-chromed lace wheels. The lace wheels probably are the only current style that would
look good, although I would have preferred the standard chrome to the gold. Silver accents
are tamped on either side. The car is manufactured in Malaysia.
This really is a beautiful car. It would make a nice Treasure hunt one day.
