1999 First Editions #11
Fiat 500C

This First Editions
casting has been hard to locate, due to both a sparse release to date, and consumers grabbing
them as soon as they appear. It is getting snatched up because it is a good-looking
vehicle, one of the more popular ones this year.
The model is based on a late 1930's Fiat Topolino 500C ragtop that has been chopped and
customized for drag racing. The Mattel designers have produced a sleek vehicle,
complete with blown engine, bulging quad exhaust, an oversized racing cage and a super
sized spoiler. The body is finished in a beautiful rich metallic purple with gold
pinstripe accents tamped down the sides. The engine is part of a chromed plastic insert,
which also consists of a simulated mirrored windshield, dashboard and steering wheel, as well
as the exhausts and front suspension. The single seat, and rear packed parachute are
part of the nickel-plated metal chassis. Other interior features are part of a gray
plastic piece that includes the rollbar cage and rear spoiler. The car has a nice weight
to it and rides on the standard five-spoke wheels.
When you compare this Malaysian-made beauty to the real Topolino, very little in common remains.
But this is an appealing design, with a lot of detail throughout. Nicely done.
