1999 First Editions #9
Tee'd
Off

I would not have
minded seeing this car appear last year in the First Editions as it was
originally scheduled to. When I saw the poster picture, I admit I was
neutral about the car. But now that I have seen it, the Tee'd Off
is an interesting concept car, and the first one to appear in the 1999 First
Editions series.
On the poster, this customized golf cart appeared to be mostly plastic, so it
was a pleasant surprise to find the body and chassis to be metal. For
those keeping score, that's four out of seven cars that are all-metal so far this
year - nice to see Mattel put the "cast" back into die-cast. The body is
painted white pearl metallic, while the chassis has a bright nickel-plated
surface. The matte-finish gray plastic interior piece also includes the
rear bumper and the golf club bags. The massive rear-mounted blown engine
is chromed plastic, except for the exhaust pipes, which are part of the chassis.
The roof section is molded in a pearled white plastic to match the body paint,
and carries the only tamped decorations on the car. A tiny HW logo is tamped
on the roof in gold. The roof is removeable, but not as easily as the orange
pieces of 1998's Slideout. The car rides on standard five spoke wheels,
small up front, large in back. The car is currently manufactured in Malaysia.
The Tee'd Off, with its sloped roof and big slicks, reminds me of 1970's
Sand Crab a little bit. The car is well-balanced, and works well on the
track. Visually, the golf bags and clubs are a nice touch. Not a bad
little car and, judging by the poster, there are many more interesting concepts to come.
