1999 First Editions #18
Turbolence

There are some interesting
designs on the `99 First Editions roster, and this is one of them.
The Turbolence has finally shown up in all areas of the country.
Big Arv believes the car is in disguise the Lister Jaguar from
the late 1950s. This is a high probability, yet there are differences between
the two. I think Mattel might have been inspired by the Lister Jaguar in the
design of this car. Regardless of how it was conceived, the Turbolence
is a well-designed vehicle. The metal body is painted in gloss black enamel
with gold and purple graphics modestly applied. The detail parts are all part
of the same gold chrome plated plastic insert, which includes the engine, cockpit,
gas cap and side running lights. The body sits on a zinc-plated sparsely-detailed
metal chassis. The car rides on large gold-hub Lamborghini-style (five hole)
wheels. It is currently manufactured in Malaysia.
The Turbolence is a good-looking vehicle, and it's always nice to see another
all-metal car in the line. This one would look good in any Hot Wheels era,
with Spectraflame paint and redlines, or metallic paint and gold Hot Ones
hubs. Substituting the subtle gold highlights in place of the ubiquitous chrome
is a nice elegant touch. Thankfully, the "powers that be" decided against the
blue with gold five-spoke wheel scheme that was on the pre-production model, although
it could turn up as a variation later in the year. This black beauty is a winner.
