The moment
Carroll Shelby dropped a high-performance 289 cubic inch Ford engine into the
lightweight body of a British Ace roadster, the retired auto racer became the
producer of world-class sports cars. His newborn Cobra, often called "the
fastest street car in the world," quickly established a reputation that has
endured for decades.
The previous words adorn the box that holds the 35th Anniversary of the
Shelby Cobra collectible set. The set features two highly detailed replicas,
one of the customized Shelby Cobra, the second of the "Cobra-inspired"
Dodge Viper GTS. Both cars feature
operating hoods with detailed painted engines. The Cobra is painted a medium
metallic blue with painted white enamel stripes and accents. The headlights are
painted in silver, while the taillights are highlighted in red. The exhaust
pipes are painted in white, and the turn signals in amber. The Viper carries a
coat of blue enamel paint accentuated with painted white enamel stripes. The headlights
and fog lights are highlighted in silver, the turn signals are painted in
orange and the taillights are also painted red. Both cars have well-detailed
chassis painted in a matte black finish, and ride on chrome Pro-Circuit six-spoke wheels.
The chassis are secured to the car bodies with screws.
The interiors are molded in gray plastic, with details painted in flat black.
Both interiors carry a simulated spare tire on the rear deck. The wheels are
as free-spinning as any basic car with Pro-Circuits and the cars roll freely,
although most collectors will not race these babies on the track!
The cars are mounted in a hard acrylic case, with a single screw holding each
car. The case is enclosed in a decorative box with markings including the
Cobra and Viper medallions and a Carroll Shelby portrait. The HW Collectibles
logo adorns the lower right corner of the box, and the informational blurb is
printed on the back. The entire product is made in China.
This is a fabulous set, with more car detail than the previous Anniversary collectibles
sets, but less than the 1:64 scale Legends series vehicles. The craftsmanship
of the total product is extremely well done, and well worth the price.
Hopefully, there are more of these types of sets to come.
