`67 Pontiac G.T.O.

GTO 3/4 view

Close-up: front grill This is the First Editions model that wasn't.  It is one of the most anticipated entries in the HW line, yet it has appeared only in Limited Edition sets.  This item is still worthy of review, as it is one in a recent succession of models Mattel has produced in the last three years, based on classic muscle from the years 1957 through 1970.

Close-up: hood The G.T.O. of the mid-sixties is considered by many to be the premier muscle car of that era.  Mattel's HW offering of the 1967 Pontiac classic brings forth memories of this powerful vehicle.  The made-in-China casting is well-proportioned and has many of the details of the 1967 muscle car.  The raked body, which has been painted in various colors with a flat black simulated vinyl roof, is attached to a well-detailed chromed plastic chassis.  The black plastic interior has detailed relief molded into the seats, but no detail on the dashboard face.  Close-up: drivetrain The only visual compromise that is noticeable on the model is in the fender wells, which are oversized to accommodate the standard wheels.  The G.T.O. utilizes medium-sized wheels in the back and small-sized wheels up front.  While I personally feel that the car would have looked better with small wheels all around and a less-exaggerated rake (a la the original Customs from way back in 1968), this doesn't detract much from the appearance of the model.

This model was rumored to be the 1997 First Editions #8 throughout most of last year, and many were disappointed when this did not materialize.  Also, unfortunately, the G.T.O. does not appear in the 40-car roster of the 1998 First Editions.  We can only hope that Mattel will release the car in the regular line eventually.  Overall, kudos to Mattel for producing a much-desired albeit limited model. 65Skylark
