1998 First Editions #6
Jaguar D-Type

In a word: OOOOOOOOH! I like this
car a lot. First, it's nice to see Mattel do a model of a classic racer so deserving of
immortalization as a Hot Wheels car. It's twice as good when they do such a good job.
The car is a dark blue pearl over a black base coat; this appears to be the same
shade used on the second release of the Demo Man Corvette Stingray III which
came out in the latter half of `97. The body is a two piece metal monocoque,
giving it a good heft, and the interior is gray plastic. A muffler which is part
of the interior molding pokes out on the bottom of the car on the left side; nice
touch. Similarly, headlights are molded as part of the windshield piece, helping
to add to the realism.
Mattel has wisely chosen medium sized chrome 5-spokes for this car; I couldn't think
of a better choice. These wheels are nice in that the tires have a realistic profile,
as opposed to the newer lace, tri-blade or five-hole wheels which look like they have
a solid rubber strip for a tire.
Tampos are very scale, with two white stripes running widthwise between the headlights,
and large number "4" tampos in black on white dots front and back.
All in all, a winner in my books; the British Leyland fans will love this one. Nice to see Mattel
holding up to their best standard in the tooling of this car.
